Books for Children:
Thanks to the National Endowment for the Humanities, we recently received a collection of seventeen classic hardcover books for young readers as well as bonus material (the complete DVD edition of The Civil War: A Film by Ken Burns, the companion book to The Civil War series, and Declaring Independence: The Origin and Influence of America’s Founding Document. In addition, we received bookmarks for distribution and posters for display.
Kindergarten to Grade 3:
· Tico and the Golden Wings – a fable about a bird born without wings whose dearest wish is granted
· A More Perfect Union: The Story of Our Constitution – the story of a milestone in American history
· When Marian Sang: The True Recital of Marian Anderson – a book about the gifted black contralto
Grades 4 to 6:
· César ˇSi, Se Puede! / Yes, We Can! - a celebration of the life of Cesar Chavez
· Eagle Song – the tale of a Native American whose family moves to a new city
· The Great Little Madison – the story of the sickly child who grows up to become President
· Darby - a first-person narrative about what it's like for an ordinary white kid of the 1920’s
to suddenly discover evil — and courage — where she lives
Grades 7 to 8:
· Chains – a book that addresses the price of freedom for both a nation and for an individual
· Warriors Don’t Cry – a narrative about integration in Arkansas schools in the 1950’s
· Lincoln Shot: A President’s Life Remembered – a book to give you a feel for what it was like to be alive in 1865
and learn that the President had been assassinated
· Hitch – the tale of a teenager during the Great Depression
Grades 9 to 12:
· The Souls of Black Folk - this book's largely autobiographical chapters take you through the life
of an Afro-American after the Emancipation Proclamation
· American Creation: Triumphs and Tragedies at the Founding of the Republic - an examination of the period between
the War of Independence and the Louisiana Purchase
· Lincoln in His Own Words – a collection of Lincoln’s speeches, letters and writings
· Carver: A Life in Poems – a glimpse into George Washington Carver's life through a series of lyrical poems
· Twelve Angry Men – a blistering character study and an examination of the American melting pot
and the judicial system that keeps it in check
· Killer Angels – a novel about the Battle of Gettysburg
